Sharing your screen isn't super usual these days since most companies have gotten very used to interviewing online and have figured out a set of tools/processes that they already use for coding interviews.

I've had more than one 'phone call' where I was asked to get on a laptop to do some coding. Even if a recruiter tells you something, the process may be more team specific or the recruiter may not have enough information. If you're interviewing for a technical role, I've learned it's always good practice to be prepared for the technical interview. You should change your expectations with how involved recruiters are with the teams and interviewers. I’m just letting you know that this “recruiter told me something that was wrong” scenario will probably happen again.

If you don’t want to take the couple of minutes to just prep your pc for an interview then go ahead. I don’t think there’s anything unfair about being asked to share your screen in an interview even if the recruiter said otherwise. Can recruiters give wrong information? Yes. Is screen sharing common in interviews? Yes. Usually their info about the interviews is from feedback from candidates that got interviewed. Recruiters are not involved in the interview process beyond passing candidates to the hiring manager. There would be no way for the recruiter to know what I would ask in an interview. I’ve interviewed people at 3 companies and at all three of them I did not talk to the recruiter at all. I've interviewed at a few places already and this was the first time when I was asked to share my screen during live coding. And I was unprepared, to be fair, given that I was told no coding would be required - but at the same time, even if I was told, should I have expected to share my screen from my personal computer? That ate up ~10 minutes of our time and the interviewer seemed so displeased that I was "unprepared".

He says "oh miscommunication" but proceeds to push us towards doing live coding. So I hop on my laptop and the interviewer says we'll be doing SQL - I tell him that my understanding is that this is going to be a technical conversation. Going into the interview, I didn't even know it was going to be a "technical screen", as my recruiter specifically told me it would be just a 30 minute technical interview (describing past projects etc) without any live coding. I recently had a technical screen with a pretty large fintech company for a data scientist role. We could always do with more help and wisdom, friend!
